We bought a new car recently and they pushed it hard. It was very easy, “no.”
Maybe enough people sign up for the free trial and never turn it off…
Last car I bought in 2018 it was still optional. It surprised me at the time, but it wasn't even mentioned except in passing, and I turned down the functionality because it would have required a package upgrade that I didn't want or need.

That’s no reason for them to not charge you
The XM option came with a bigger radio that had a CD player (totally useless for me) and had some interior things that were purely cosmetic but cost a lot of money. It just wasn't worth it. Had XM been part of the base package, I would have just said yes and not activated it.
XM is a primary entry point for the emergency systems broadcast over radio, so it has it's uses.
