After Frank Herbert died one of his boys picked up the reins and wrote a couple of books continuing the Dune saga. And not for nothing so far I think it's better than what Frank wrote. I'm on Hunters of Dune.

They really took Frank's work and ran with it / milked it for all it's worth.

The Expanded Universe. (dunenovels.com)

FWIW, I'm reading through Chapterhouse: Dune right now.

I just started the Dune series. I love the first book so far but the original film freaked me out.

The first film from the 90's I feel is the best out of all of them. It's weird as fuck but visually stunning.

funny, i got my dad one of those books when i was a kid and only knew that he liked dune, not who the author was.

recently he was rereading it and said it wasn't bad.

It really is some of the best sci-fi. Obviously the Frank Herbert books are fantastic but I think his son's book so far has a more interesting plot line. The first three Dune books weren't really all that exciting. It's as they progressed, book five and six I thought were really great. Could I tell you what they were about, nope. The last time I heard them was about a year ago.
