That's hard. As a father, The Shining gets to me, the scene where Jack has to tell Danny to run because he no longer has control just destroys me.

On an existential note, Blindsight by Peter Watts is pretty damn chilling. It's also a really good piece of hard Science Fiction but isn't as bland as a lot of hard SF tends to be.

Blindsight hearkens back to older scifi for me. Back when it was half existential horror. I liked it.

That's what I loved about it, I remember cracking open some of the pulpier sci-fi and just immediately knowing there was no happy end in store. I got the same feeling from Blindsight, it's a book that masters Lovecraftian horror so effortlessly.
