Tolkien was a great author, but he was also an ivory tower “intellectual.” His works were largely masturbatory and self-indulgent, but the quality of the writing carried them over this ridge. Disney was an industrialist, a self-made man with no time or patience for the sneering, effete professors of Oxford or Cambridge.

Add to this Tolkien’s personal affinity for jews, contrasted against Disney’s pragmatic opposition, Disney’s transparent profit motives and seeking of audience as opposed to Tolkien’s belief in some farcical “pure artistry” despite his own dabbling in commercialism, and Disney’s “raiding” of Tolkien’s beloved faerie tales for filmic subject matter, and Tolkien could easily burn with disdain for Disney, while Disney wouldn’t think of Tolkien at all.
