I've seen people tap the tab area before opening the can to supposedly release some of the pressure and avoid beer spraying out. I've not seen any proof that it works, though. Is that what you're talking about?

It can't possibly work. It's a wives tale. Once the evil CO2 is released from solution, tapping it can't magically make it go back into solution.
Think of it like jews coming into a country, once they enter, it's damn near impossible to get them out.
