Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has brokered the release from Russia of ten foreign fighters in Ukraine, the Saudi foreign ministry said, cited by Reuters. They are citizens of five countries and were captured while fighting in Ukraine.

The prisoners, who are citizens of Croatia, Morocco, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, were transferred from Russia to Saudi Arabia by Saudi authorities, according to a ministry statement. Saudi authorities are now "facilitating procedures for their safe return to their respective countries," the statement continued.

Bin Salman personally negotiated the release, which took place as part of a wider prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, the ministry added.

Two US veterans and five British nationals held by Russian-backed forces for months have been released as part of a prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine brokered by Saudi Arabia, CNN confirmed, publishing photos of the freed Americans.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss tweeted that five British citizens had been released. Three more prisoners, who are Moroccan, Swedish and Croatian nationals, were released in the exchange.

The full details of the prisoner swap are unclear, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Moscow and Kiev had agreed to exchange 200 prisoners. The swap would be the largest such exchange since Russia's war in Ukraine began in February.

Earlier today, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said just over 1,000 foreigners remain active in the ranks of the Ukrainian army. The Russian minister added that more than 150 NATO officers and advisers are in Kiev planning and commanding Ukraine's forces.
