The United States lags behind its partners in the list of developed countries, according to a new report by the UN Office for Sustainable Development. The country, which last year ranked 32nd out of 193 UN member states, dropped from 11th place in one year, and is now even after Ukraine on the list, ranking 41st-a position before Bulgaria. Bulgaria is ranked 42nd.
The ratings are based on the country's progress in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, 17 indicators that are calculated on the progress of society. These include specific achievements like "clean water and sanitation" and "zero hunger", along with less specific goals like "quality of education" and "responsible consumption and production", but they are all described on the UN website as critical to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. – what all Member States have agreed to do.
The Scandinavian countries lead the UN ranking for 2022, as Finland ranks first, while Denmark, Sweden and Norway rank in the top four.
The UN report is not the only one that identifies the US as a country in decline. The Economist classified it as "the shortcomings of democracy" earlier this year in its assessment of the state of democracy on a global scale. Indicators in the study reported on the electoral process and pluralism of States, functioning, governance, political participation, democratic political culture, and civil liberties.
