Trees are quick growing weeds. We only think they are special because we are tiny and we die quickly.
Form any altitude you quickly see they are basically planet moss.
In the 1800's, the forestry industry in Ontario stripped much of the surface of the province by clear cutting the forests. Vast areas were stripped completely bare of trees, such that they looked like the surface of Mars. Today there are so many trees there again that the annual forest fires threaten the communities. Forests are adapted to rapidly return after the fires burn them completely to ash.
Logging does not destroy the forests or the rivers, as damaging as it may be in the short term. This is proven beyond all doubt.
Depends how extensive it is and what the local climate is like. In some places the trees are what hold the soil together and stop it washing away.
