If they guy was smart enough to know a sidearm was needed, why would he allow his wife and child up there without the same protection?

Sad story. Who knows. They likely shouldn't have left the cabin without protection, but shit happens. My guess is she had a rifle or handgun available, but just didn't take it on her walk. The story doesn't say though.

That's sad and everything. The baby was 10 months old. How was the mother still on maternity leave?

I was wondering the same thing when I read it. When they said she was on maternity leave, I thought it would be a newborn myself.

In Canada women get a yr of maternity leave.

Maybe she was pregnant again, that's what I assumed.

If she was close enough to giving birth to be on maternity leave she wouldn't be taking hikes.

I have no idea how much leave they get in Canada, but pregnant people can walk, a hike does not have to be miles and miles.

My question is more why the hell the mother was out in the wild without a means to protect herself and child. Even in the semi rural area where I live and walk my dogs, I make sure I am always armed. Coyotes and all. But a grizzlie? Damn. Big caliber. No exception. At all times.

Divorce by bear mauling is definitely not something you read about every day.
