Precut advice

My niece lost her battle with cancer recently. I'm working on something for my sister and my nephew.

On this project I've cut out the silhouette of my nephew on one side and my niece on the other. I did this out of red oak. I also cut out a silhouette of her on poplar.

I intend to glue them together after I finish cutting the back of the poplar one. Here's a mock up of both sides.

How do I go about staining and sealing them without risking darkening the poplar? Should I stain the oak first, glue them then seal them?

How much time do you have until you present your gift? Enough time to test it out on some small pieces first and see how it ends up?

I've got about 2 weeks. Your right, my best bet is to test it on something else

Why not finish them individually then glue together? Separate they are very easy to apply a finish but when glued together it will be harder to get an even finish.

I'd do as you suggest, stain the oak, then glue up and seal.

You could also just try oiling the pieces, but that is harder to deal with over time.
