Microsoft surprised its Windows 10 user base with a sudden u-turn on ongoing security updates, essentially offering them to all home users for free until October 2026.
Microsoft has kicked the can down the road, but when October 2026 approaches they either need to extend security support, or many people will jump ship for Linux.
Even if they extend support after that, if their next Windows version doesn’t remove all the Windows 11 problems they will lose people. Users skipped Vista and 8 because Microsoft put out a sane version later. If they don’t eventually relent this time they will lose people.
