You got to wonder if these machines even need security patches or if it's just them pretending. I use Linux. Not saying it's perfect but it works for me.

It's less about security patches (usually) than it is software. Eventually all your shit will stop getting updates. After that it breaks and stops working. Depending on your use case it might not be an issue, but for someone's daily driver, that will become one

Heck I remember one of my old jobs where they were still running Windows XP and windows had stopped doing updates for that for almost 10 years. The software they had for this particular function needed XP to run and no one was buying new stuff.

In all seriousness though, it's very common. Security as a whole nowadays is a rather moot point in my humble opinion. Exploits generally won't affect the average user unless they're pants on head retarded and go to places or open things they shouldn't. That said...my work is having issues with that right now, so I guess the general population is that stupid.

Either way: when my firefox stops updating, it's time for a new OS or pacman -Syu more often lol
