I did this with our kitten. Fiancee and I were fostering a preggo cat that gave birth to 4 kittens, one was unresponsive so had to massage it with a tissue to not get my scent over it. Once it started to move and breathe then whacked it under mama to get all cleaned up. We ended up keeping the kitten and mama and the others went to great homes :-)
