Nope. I'm a retired Mainer living in the sticks. Most White state in the Union. State motto is "Maine, The Way Life Should Be".
Just talking about Maine and where to move.
Coastal is beautiful, expensive and loaded with libs. Inland lakes and ponds are much better, until a wave of tourists from lib states hit before Memorial weekend, summer vacations, through foliage season. I often go further north to my camp in the Western Mountains of Maine to escape that rat race.
What are the insects like in the summer?
Springtime thru about August blackflies and mosquitoes especially after a wet spring or summer rains. Deerflies and mooseflies on hot summer days. Late August is usually virtually bug free, I used to take my vacations in late August.
Deep Woods Off or Old Woodsman's Fly Dope (if you don't mind the smell) usually keeps the bugs away.
I've heard they can be intense, I was raised in southern swamps so I'm not sure if it's any different. I've been in clouds of mosquitoes where you couldn't see the through them to the other side. The big flys are the ones that'd scare me. Mosquito netting is a must as the amount of repellent needed would start to poison you. I only ask because the couple people I know mentioned the bugs. They weren't from where I was so I don't know the context they were coming from.
