A large number of down votes are an indication of someone being an incorrigible asshole. I get down voted many times, but I don't cry about it and just try to not be too inflammatory. I you feel that fake internet points somehow gives you stature, or degrades your character in the case of down votes, then the problem goes much deeper than the superficial discussion here.
