Why does the "genocide" of Native Americans continue to fill people's imagination, when it was smallpox, not other humans, that literally did 98% of the killing? Why does nobody seem to care about the human-driven genocides committed by the Mongol and Aztec empires? Why does the enslavement of Africans by Europeans dominate peoples' imaginations, as opposed to the enslavement of Africans by Arabs, or other Africans? Why must the Holocaust never be forgotten, while the holodomor is barely even remembered?
Propaganda. Including the Titanic too. It has a movie after all. People are taught at a very young age about slavery and not too much older when they learn about the holocaust and colonization of the New World. They are largely taught narratives with little statistics and are instead told narratives meant to paint whiteness as evil.
What's your favorite genocide/mass-murder/tragedy/ship-sinking that isn't promoted by propaganda?
Hard mode: No USS Liberty.
I'll pick a genocide and say the Bantu Expansion. It really puts the issue of who does South Africa belong to into question, if you care about whose ancestors were there first.
Heard of it, got a good source for reading more about it?
The why natural gas smells like rotten eggs
Would've been cooler if instead of adding a smell to the natural gas, they just required a canary in every building.
