I knew it was a cover, but thats about it. I've always liked the cover better than the original, but will give the original another listen, now that I know the backstory :)
I member my dad made me play this song on repeat when I bought the CD single years ago. I wonder if it was the nostalgia from him remembering the original and surrounding events.

Around this time there were a handful of "splatter platters" and "death disks" made. Leader of the pack, Tell laura I love her, Dead man's curve, Teen Angel, Honey. Along with last kiss, my other favorite was Laurie (Strange Things Happen) (hooktube.com). They played on the emotions of teenagers facing death. Powerful stuff when marketed well.
