I had occasion to deal with two of these types of people. The first one, I did not know the why, just that he was a master manipulator and I was caught in the web due to work. The 2nd one, I had read up on narcissists so had some tools already. I mostly used what you outlined and it worked very well to keep me out of his web, though he tried MANY times to pull me in.
