Well, well well... here we've got a tv series with the homely girl from madmen and the black girl from Orange is the New Black (if you have to ask me which black girl you're racist) (also if you call me out for still having a netflix username and password you're a bigot -- they're not mine you transphobe). Anyway, known actresses (sorry, actrexerresses) and a sucessful book to draw plot from seems like a good start to a hit tv series, right? RIGHT? HOW COULD IT GO WRONG?
I watched several episodes of this, which is about a 3-hour commitment. It's a dystopian fiction in which a right-wing faction has executed a coup on the US government, resulting in a theocracy that subjugates women. Apparently, the powers that be also massively fucked up with birth control, and have sterilized 90% of the population.
As a result, the fertile women (Peggy from madmen and the black girl from OITNB, for example) become slaves to the upper classes, who are so desperate to reproduce that they will let their husbands (who are mostly sterile but not recognized as such because of their male privilege) fuck them.
The show is persecution porn. Peggy from madmen goes from being a free-spirited, race-mixing (yes, really) liberal woman to being called a slut (right before things turn bad), and then later chastised and enslaved. It's the liberal nightmare of being subjugated under right-wing authoritarianism (but also maybe a guilty pleasure fantasy). There are also echoes to the language used in the wake of the election. Peggy and black friend are part of "the resistance" -- I've never heard that before. How the hell did these writers get so creative?
While it was slightly painful to watch, it was somewhat instructive in the mind of a liberal today. The ties from the show to the tropes of the most recent election leave no doubt that the dystopian scenario they paint is imminent if something is not done. If we were in a college class getting our BAs in English, we would doubtless be scribbling 'woman vs society' in the margins of every page.
The men in the movie (in the 1st three episodes anyway) are either policemen, a doctor (1), or a commander (1), (the guy who fucks the liberal girl because his wife can't get pregnant). Not surprisingly, the commander is handsome, but obtuse. The wife of the commander is a tall, skinny bitch with her blonde hair pulled back in a tight bun. There are your architypes for you: rapey handsome Mr. conservative and fucking barren Becky.
The final verdict: this series is shit. I'm sure you were dying to get to the end so you could hear that. I spent more time on this then I'm proud to admit.
edit: so many errors
