I upvote posts that provoke a good discussion, even if OPs idea that started the discussion is garbage. We should not assume suggestions that have a lot of upvotes are good or even popular ideas.

I upvote items I want to see discussed, regardless of whether I agree with them. Unless it's clearly SPAM or such.

Exactly. And I think OPs need to be periodically reminded that just because their idea has a lot of upvotes doesn't mean it's not trash.
