I mean, I get the joke already. The literal goal of a sport is arbitrary.

But I like how people rub it in as if their life is somehow more meaningful.

Everything is based on an arbitrary reference point, not just sports. To focus solely on how this phenomenon is present in sports is disingenuous at best. You could say the same thing about video games and how pointless they are. You could say the same thing about life and how pointless it is.

I only say this now because I've seen a different "sportsball" meme on the frontpage repeatedly for the past week.

Sports was heavily promoted at the turn of the 20th century to occupy the minds and distract the tribal instinct of the masses at a time when they were beginning to make great gains in leasure time so as to avoid people paying too close attention to political matters.

The memes you've been seeing on the front page, I have been sharing. Let me tell you a secret about that. I'm just doing a clearing of my archives. These all came to me on the same day, but rather than flood Poal with all of them at the same time, I post one every day or two.

Why do you have memes coming your way?

Meme trap. Works wonders. No more memes in my house.

But every now and then there is something truly inspiring.

Watching people who are good at what they do and are passionate about it can be very worthwhile.

I would listen to a proficient chicken farmer talk about raising chickens and consider it time well spent. And considering where things are going.... it probably would be.

But ESPN commentary.... no thanks.

Yes. Sometimes it is nice to go a local bar and just watch a hockey game while drinking beers with friends. It's an entertainment thing for me and a means of taking a break from all the dooming and politics. Not my end all be all for my existance. Some people obsess over the shit and I find it odd, especially for grown ass men. The SJW bullshit is what has ruined sports. Some people on this site think anyone who has any hobby other than black pilling is a "sheep" controlled by the jews.

There's nothing bad about sports. For the participants. The extent people go as mere spectators is worthy of ridicule.

We need more local amateur sports instead of this shit.

A lot of people it is the atmosphere of the crowd that they love especially at a championship game. It is fun to experience. Now, blowing your bank account out to get to a game and go into depression if your team loses? That is just pathetic

Go do that with your amateur team. And then have a beer with them afterwards.

I agree. Only, sportsball seems to be used as the modern day "bread and circuses" to keep normies pacified and focused on nonsense instead of their own lives or society itself.

Life is only pointless from an atheist perspective

Video games are pointless too, but there aren’t similar memes about them because our culture doesn’t celebrate video games as something highly valuable, like they do for sports. It’s not socially acceptable to love video games as much as many people love sports. The “sportsball” meme makes a lot of sense and it is good social commentary.

I dont think its the reason for the focus is that sportsball is any less meaningful or more arbitrary than most other things, but that it is currently the most effective distraction in our society.
