Is telegram suspect because it wants a phone number? Or is that just not a big deal for some reason?

Phone numbers are easy to fake. Just look at you spam calls.

So if privacy is extremely important you can use a throw away number.

So when I download the telegram app it doesn't automatically get my number? I can put in a burner? Again sorry for the lack of understanding.

I've never tried to use anything but my number.

Telegram needs to send a pin number to a phone number.

It doesn't have to be a phone specifically. But it needs to be something you can receive a text message on.

You can get a burner phone with a burner number to get the text message. Then use that phone number to sign in to telegram on your main phone.

Or just continue using the burner phone. Depending on how much privacy you need.
