So when I download the telegram app it doesn't automatically get my number? I can put in a burner? Again sorry for the lack of understanding.

I've never tried to use anything but my number.

Telegram needs to send a pin number to a phone number.

It doesn't have to be a phone specifically. But it needs to be something you can receive a text message on.

You can get a burner phone with a burner number to get the text message. Then use that phone number to sign in to telegram on your main phone.

Or just continue using the burner phone. Depending on how much privacy you need.

Isn't it getting your phone number a major vulnerability? They claim it really isn't somehow that I don't understand.

If you are using your phone number it could be a problem.
