Some people try to claim all the old gods were anscestors that were elevated over time. I don't really see this as legit since the chief god to most Indo-europeans was the sky or sky father. It seems to have been true for some of them for sure though, like the demigods. The romans thought Odin was mercury. They were both tricksters and wanderers and the gods of magic and had some other similarities.
