Potential is by definition unknowable - it is a made up estimate of what one 'could do', and has many analogues to similarly useless estimates used in the finance world, in measuring revenue of a country, etc. There is a long history of philosophy here that actually dates back to the first IQ tests, which were the first attempts to judge someone's 'potential'. Many argued that IQ testing was folly, for just this reason, which is why nobody took it seriously until recently.
