Education was not compulsory back then and only few could read. Nutrition probably played a more prominent role since the Nordics only had rotten fish to eat. For the record, nowadays the effect of education and nutrition on IQ are maxed out everywhere. So going to a better school or eating organic doesn't make you any smarter.
And I don't buy that higher IQ always wins the war. Britain destroyed China right?
That's actually a good point but you choose a bad example. Britain was at its cognitive peak during the industrial revolution. Up until that point there was a strong, brutal selection pressure in favor of the richer (and smarter). Back then, the Brits were much more intelligent than the malnourished Chinks. A better example would have been the Islamic expansion. Very low-IQ savages took over Byzantine. I don't think that applies to the Neanderthals though, because those groups were much more primitive and animalistic. A little advantage in intelligence would have made a huge difference.
Don't forget the Neanderthal wars lasted 100 thousand years. In fact they held the line for 100 thousand years before the decline began. Latest theories are a disease was the catalyst and chipped away at their numbers.

Depending on where/when you are referring to, this could be very wrong. Education has been compulsory in the US since the 1800s, and America has had a high literacy rate since its founding. John T. Gatto wrote more on twisting historical literacy rates, and cites Stone et. al., but the source has been memory holed.

Actually, the Chinese just had a woman for an Emperor. She sucked, and spent no money on military development, instead erecting massive gold statues every time she had a birthday. This is why she lost the Opium Wars, started by British jews smuggling Opium, the new drug of choice, into China. She continued to suck until the 8 nations sacked Beijing, and then jews propped up Mao and ended the dynasties entirely.
We were in the context of the distant past. Before the industrial revolution literacy was in general poor, except among the Jews.
China might have been mismanaged by that woman, but the British were at or about their peak, speaking of intelligence.
