They realized it was a valuable idea, so they killed the competitor, and started their own.

After witnessing the stir that CoalFax created, I knew that their WordPress implementation wouldn't be able to stand up to the demand. Their server was loading about 2mb of data on visit in just HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and also slow image and video loading suggested that their site was storing such data on the local file system, likely submitted through some WordPress plugin. I thought I could do better, but CoalFax shutting down was entirely their own doing due to the creator getting doxed.
