What if the first strain was a dud so they cooked up something actually deadly and it wipes the nation?

I mean if they really wanted to release a super deadly virus they have the capability to do so, it just leaves one to wonder why they haven't yet.. unless they know it would really fuck things up

This supposed new strain is said to be "highly contagious."

Highly contagious and high mortality don't go together in viruses. The more contagious, the less dangerous, because you can't spread if you kill your host quickly. Every virus mutates to a less dangerous, more transmissible form at some point. SARS-2.0 Electric Jewgaloo is no different.

And given the current version everyone's all panicked over is not that dangerous, the "new strain" is probably just them detecting the common fucking cold.

That is rarely ever the case since a virus naturally selected to survive will logically mutate to become less deadly to make it happen. The only times this seemingly does not occur is in movies where a spontaneous deadly mutation ushers in the downfall of civilization. As it stands, the only thing ushering the downfall is communism.
