We are creatures of feast and famine, it is in our nature to be cautious. Probably has something to do with evolving in seasonal weather...being too hasty or too "hot-blooded" might mean death if the time isn't -just- right. A storm could roll in, the food could run out, any number of travesties can happen in the Famine of winter.
As a civilization, we have Feasted for the past couple hundred years. It'll take time for some of us to recognize the enemy at the gate.
Hopefully, the wrath of the awakened saxon will come before we're bred out of existence.
