You are right in part, but only in part. When the Shah was put in power by the CIA via coup, Iran was a modern nation. As far as the why, that is up in the air, and I'm still trying to puzzle that piece.
I'm not even referring to muslim extremism. I live in a nation that is slowly being taken over by muslim immigrants. I've seen the changes over 30 years. I've seen how our country is being slowly modified to adhere to a belief set that is incompatible with the native culture. I've seen it happen in our neighboring nations. I have had more than my share of interactions with the followers of the so called religion of peace. I just don't want them here anymore. Their welcome has been worn out, and I am far from alone in feeling this way.
That being said, I have no problem with them returning to their nations. I don't want to bomb Iraq or Afghanistan. I did my share of anti war protesting, more than my share even. I don't want them dead any more than anyone else. I just don't want them here fucking up my world.
