Yep. I agree with your wife's diagnosis. Keto and/or low carb seem to work well for most folks that lead a more sedentary existence. And if you're cutting carbs you MUST make up those lost macros with fats. I find it beneficial to dip into keto every now and then, but my activity level and body chemistry can't sustain it for prolonged periods of time. And not all carbs are created equal. Carbs, be they simple or complex, are more beneficial if they're part of a fibery or nutrient dense package. Sweet potatoes, squashes, rices, low glycemic fruits, fuck even pasta from quality grains are beneficial if you're using em for fuel. Snickers and beer, not so much. Flip the food pyramid on its head. I eat as fresh as I can. Quality meats and fresh veggies and fruits. I cranked out a post further down this thread detailing my routine, if you're interested. But the gist of it is, it's MY routine. It works for ME. Everyone has to find what works best for them. Keep what works for you and shitcan the rest. Sounds like your mind is right and you're on a good path. Now it's just a matter of dialing it in and tailoring it to your needs. Keep crushing!
Right! I'll up my carbs and let you know if it happens again. I just now, after over a month, got my taste buds back for bananas. They may as well have been poison until two days ago. I've tried so many diets, and it's wild. Even only eating organic and local, I still gain weight, so I really think no grain is the way to go for me. I haven't yet, but I will eat rice if I have to.
I read your comment. You're in your 50s? Sounds like you are kicking ass! I'm only 34, and I'm realizing anything over 30 and you have to fight to stay in shape! ued to be, I didn't have to lift a finger.
What's all this about quitting drinking? Like 100% or do you do once a week? I like to get drunk on fridays. No partying, but you know, at home to unwind. I did give up smoking 7 years ago though!
Nope. Zero booze. Cut it out when I first went full bore keto due to the sugar. Had been a dyed in the grape wino and missed it. Stared to reintroduce organic wines and high grade whiskies since the sugar is distilled out. All good for a while. Then started to get hung the fuck over from a glass or two. Punishment was not befitting of the crime. Put my science hat on and discovered there are 2 liver enzymes that break down booze: ADH & ALDH, respectively. As we age, our bodies decrease production (to varying degrees) of these booze filters. Mine seems to have fucked right off, so the Devil's Own Brew is off the list. C'est la vie
And my intermittent feast one meal a day thing was an evolution that took years. I've fucked around with all sorts of eating and training protocols and have just figured out what works best for me. Clean foods in a short window and functional fitness. But I dig nerding out on that shit. Figure I'll spend the last half of my life trying to mitigate the damage incurred during the first half.
Good for you on kicking the Camel's! That's huge. I dropped the habit the day I took my first Muay Thai class. No fucking way those two can coexist.
Whoah! That's amazing you kicked booze entirely. I gotta look up that ADH thing. I've noticed I've been becoming narcaleptic when I drink lately. I just wake up and don't remember going to bed. 😬 Maybe ADH is the culprit! The human body is weird.
Do you think part of why there are no real men left is the massive amounts of estrogenic grains and booze people consume so much these days? Also, isn't weed estrogenic?
Growing up I was basically a nerd/sissy, but as I got older I realized I'm fucking Ron Swanson compared to "men" my age. Can't change a tire, can't fix anything, can't even get dirty. About all they're good at is smoking weed, living at home, and playing video games.
