Humans require sugar. It's what is known as a "nutrient."
And humans these days are a lot less active than humans 1000 years ago. Shit, for the last 60-70 years they've been pumping sugar and corn syrup into everything they can. It's the reason people are so fat these days.
The bread we eat and the beer we drink are completely different from the beer and bread of 1000 years ago.
And sugar is not a nutrient. Carbohydrates are, and sugar falls into that category.
