Do you use them for milk, wool, meat, all of the above? Hobby or business? Hope Im not being too nosey.
Milk, and I'm looking at getting a fiber goat. It's only to learn the ropes for when shit hits the fan, and because I'm attached to them. Really, they're endearing animals. I've been trying to cut back on how many we have and it's hard. Who needs five bucks? No one.
Im thinking of doing the same. If I relocate. Not living in a goat friendly environment currently. Was thinking more about sheep for wool. Then at least the males can justify their existence. ;-) Im not sure Im cut out for certain “hard decisions” though regarding livestock.
Ya two hard decisions left me today. They were the cutest bucklings I've ever seen.
It's good to get practice in making hard decisions.
Last year we had two does get listeria. The first one I tried to save up to the very end, injections every two and four hours, drenching with an herbal cocktail every hour, for just shy of five days before she died with her head in my lap as I wept and then slept for fifteen hours. The second one showed no improvement by 48 hours and my good husband put a bullet in her head.
It's not fun. I think most people forgot that life usually isn't.
