They've lost control. It's a closely guarded secret that the auto trading computers have become such an integral part of the market they can't be unplugged anymore. Worse, they don't even know how they operate or what would happen if they were unplugged. There was a really good post about it on voat back in aug/sep if someone wants to look for it.
