Eh, I basically agree with you, but I think most ppl see different years as milestones. It's basically just a convenient way to break up time. Like, they don't think things will magically change, but comparing one year to another can give you an idea of whether things are getting better or worse. With that said, I think some ppl do get superstitious, but I think they are vocal minority.
