Voat had this same ideal regarding down votes about 5 years ago when I joined. Until the popularity rose and the shills and brigades came. Without adapting to this, voat would have just been overrun.

You may see once this site starts to attract the wrong attention. It is a noble ideal, but some people don't allow for that kind of peace. Hopefully the suspicious behavior tag helps, as that type can't help but to downvote.

You aren't dealing with people who use a downvote button differently, you are dealing with people who have already fought that battle and had no choice but to adapt.

Voat was forced to adapt or die, so please step down off of that high horse. You can explain without looking down your nose so sharply.

Hopefully it goes better here, as I fully agree with the sentiment, but I also have met those who choose to make it nearly impossible.

Without voting, nothing moves around. I don't understand this crowd. The two days leading up before Christmas there was post on the front page that were two days old. Nobody had voted on in hours. If you're not going to downvote. At least upvote shit, so new stuff can surface to the top.

I've been trying to upvote to give the goats a chance to 'level up', comments only, tho. In an effort to move things along. But- come off as an ass, no upvote. There are plenty of “on topic” noise posts and comments made by “tar babies” for the purpose of being time sinks, or even just earnestly stupid and headstrong people who aren’t worth the effort. The downvote usually helps clear the brush away in a controlled burn situation.

Right. On voat I used the downvote for obvious spam ("make $1200 a week from home!!") but also for comments that were nothing but noise... like a friendly conversation about gardening or current events or whatever and there's just a non sequitur "go kys you fucking nigger kikes, I hope you all die", etc. I mean maybe it was on-topic for them but that's just spam too, in my opinion. Replying back to them was just a time sink, and sometimes they were legitimately bots anyway.

They also need to realize that just because a post is well written and more than "It's da joooooos!!!!!" or porn doesn't make it "quality content". Their methods are are more nuanced than that. There are actually people paid to forum slide disguised as "quality content", and you can tell what it is, and once you do, you can't not see it.

The holier than thou "the downvote button isn't a disagree button!!11!" screams are the main reason I stopped using Poal when I started about a year ago.

An upvote moves a story up. But there's that pesky downvote button sitting right there. I support having a real up and down option plus a large red 'report this' button over to the right. Downvote is a useful tool in social media, but having a downvote option we must never use to "vote down" is just anti-intuitive.

You are so correct. My infantile mind thinks arrow symbols are indicators, much like traffic signage. Seeing arrows that appear as they do, my simple minds sees indicators of 'up-ness' and 'down-ness'.

But I am trying real hard to be brilliant like you. Someday, I will know that an UP arrow means, "UP!" and that a DOWN arrow means... er... "DON'T YOU DARE PRESS ME!" Or something logical like that.
