That is one of the theories for the Mandela effect, that they were able to open a portal into another dimension and some of it merged into our reality or that the world / reality as we knew it actually ended in 2012 and our consciousnesses merged with the next layer of (infinite) parallel universes which caused a shift in our perception of reality but we retained our memories of our past reality.
