The metal tape has slots in the back where it connects to the metal end piece. These are secured with smal studs that loosen. When they do the end will slip around the missing bit is made up from the space between the end and where the tape stops. If the metal end is loose your tape wont read true.
dude, really? look at the top tape! The fuckin loose is so your tape will read true in a push and pull position, god damn I thought you did this work?

The slack is to work right in push pull. Look at the picture here. !/4 inch is missing. Its not an old used tape.
