This is mostly through observation but my working theory is that stupid people and stressed people are uncomfortable with their own thoughts and need to drown them out with music.

Just something I've noticed over the years is that low intelligence people seem to constantly have music playing so as to avoid conversation

There is something to this. I would not make it either or stressed or stupid. I would say there are people neither stressed nor stupid who simply do not know how to be with themselves and it is unnerving (for the non stupid) and boring (for the stupid). So they choose distraction so as not to be uncomfortable in their own minds.

And not just music. TV, txting, games on phones etc.
