History shows that many (most) of those who headed alone into seclusion ended up hunted and killed by roving gangs for their supplies. (Argentina, others.) When it's you against an armed mob, you lose unless you have a bunker or equivalent secured hard point. Just something to consider.
Also, you're assuming you're heading towards empty ground. If it gets bad enough there will already be people there who know the terrain better than you do. (Even if they don't belong there.) So, you're just a dude on the road with a backpack full of supplies they need. That would be my absolute last resort.
Stay home, unless you absolutely have to - and get to know your neighbors. There is safety in numbers, provided you can control who is in those numbers.
But, you know your situation best. I'll be the grey man with the house full of supplies - right up until the moment we have to run. If it comes to that, we have a place to go well out of the city.
I live in the center of a bad city, staying in place will mean certain and fast death. When I say the cities will burn I mean that in the most literal sense. All cities will be burnt to the ground and it will happen fast. Neighborhoods will fall next and the chaos will expand outwards.
I am pretty familiar with the area I will head to. I have done a fair amount of backpacking and climbing in the area and already have topo maps. I am an expert at land navigation and a combat veteran. My weakness is I don't know anything about hunting so the fact that I have excellent survival skills will be hindered. I suspect I could feed myself off of the land to a point using common sense. The ultimate goal would be to find a group to join after I get far away from all nearby cities.
Chances are I will still die within 6 months.
Ah - that's different then.
Have you considered a foraging course? Around me you can do weekend courses and they are fine-tuned to your environment. Not going to fill you up, but it will supplement what you can carry/scrounge. I'm not much of a hunter either. It's a skill I've been meaning to develop.
Finding a group is a good plan. And you obviously have skills that would be valuable.
great idea
