My understanding of Goodwill is that it provides the service of holding wanted junk until someone comes upon it. Its basically a brick and mortor version of freecycle.org.
The price paid for their donated goods pays for storage costs and overhead. The benefit to the donor is that they get rid of the junk immediately instead of posting and ad on an obscure site that no one who is interested in the item will ever see.
Of course instead of donating, they could just send the item to a landfill.
