oh yeah
High frequency inverter to do aluminum. Or learn to do aluminum in DC.
A good helmet with auto-dark, wide view and 4-13 shade. You want to be able to see your puddle. Argon, less splatter and smoke making your ability to see the puddle better. YouTube tutorials. Have fun!
I'm going to need an argon tank?
Only if you are gonna use argon. Don’t have to. You can just use flux core wire, but it is smokey and splatters and can make seeing your wet puddle more difficult. Seeing the puddle to keep it uniform and moving is the hard part when learning. When you can’t see it to control it things get wonky and ugly.
Argon would help you through that process faster, makes for cleaner work, but it’s not a must have. I learned on flux core, then when I finally hooked into argon a year or so later it was like well fuk that would’ve been nice to have started out with. Keep in mind argon can be a pain outdoors if you have breezes. In the shop it’s great. Learn both!
You'll need shielding gas. That's the IG of TIG.
I mainly use arc (stick) welding because that's what I've got and what I learned on as a kid on the farm.
How do you buy a tank of argon?
Plasma cutter
Mask and gloves at a minimum. Thick cotton clothing, a leather apron would be nice too.
I figured I would just squint.
Save yourself the trouble. Drop a handful of sand into your open eyes, and then dont wash it out for a week.
That's a good tip, thanks.
A grinder. Once you get enough practice you shouldn't need it afterwards. But, welding is 80% prep. You want a good weld, you need to do good prep.
I am not a particularly good welder.
I already figured prep is key. I've done painting, and it's the same premise.
If you have telegram, join us in the "Tractor Hoarders Group chat" ran by chucke2009. There is a wealth of knowledge on welding in there.
If you're not familiar with chucke2009 here's his yt channel, he's got a lot of how to welding stuff on there
I don't know how to join the group on that app.
