EVs wouldn't be even close to "affordable" without the government subsidizing the cost via taxpayer money.
Which tells you there's another reason for the push.

With a combustion engine you can get 50 miles with a couple gallons of liquid fuel. With EVs, you need massive batteries and a nation-wide electric infrastructure to transfer the power into that battery that can then be used to power the car.
Makes the citizenry more reliant upon "the higher ups" to get from point A to point B.
