The accelerator was actually a glorified button on the floor with three positions, off, slow, "fast". Worst beating I ever got from her was when I was 3, I fucked with the e brake and the thing rolled backwards into the street when the batteries were dead.

With a combustion engine you can get 50 miles with a couple gallons of liquid fuel. With EVs, you need massive batteries and a nation-wide electric infrastructure to transfer the power into that battery that can then be used to power the car.
Makes the citizenry more reliant upon "the higher ups" to get from point A to point B.
