You don't use a nylon string for that type of work. You put a circular saw blade on it and it'll end take down small saplings right to the ground. It would be easier than being bent of with a chainsaw. If you get a carbide blade you can cut into the ground without damage to the blade.

He has some pretty cool equipment for clearing brush, but rented that small bush hog just to do the island because he had no way to get heavy equip across the water

That was the one thing he did best. It was the other equipment that was not up to par the way it was, a dull saw, and a vinyl string were both subpar for getting this done easily. Heck the blade instead of vinyl would be faster and save money since the vinyl wears out really fast and cannot do much beside grass and small weeds where the blade would almost be like another chainsaw without the bending over.
