Any rule can be broken in a war, life is at stake, so, you use everything you have.

This isn't a job at Starbucks. If you voluntarily join a foreign military during wartime, you are there for the duration. If you attempt to leave, it is called desertion and you will be shot. This is common to all militaries. The US military takes foreigners as a path to citizen ship. If they tried to walk off the battlefield in Iraq or Afghanistan, they would be treated the same.
