I learned how to use a bolivian sling as a child.
It's a superior weapon vs the staff sling. With the arm wind-up, I can get more power. Also, it's something I can stick in my pocket.
But, the bolivian sling does take practice, coordination, and a bit of skill. Not something most ren-fair types have.

I used to make those without the staff, just a loop you put around your wrist and hold the other string between thumb and forefinger. You could launch a rock the size of a tennis ball about 100 yards, and that was 12 year old me.
