I don't think it'd take a year for a band of roaming niggers to be sweeping through neighboring communities looking for women, food, and arms. Holding out will be difficult if you've got a lot of access ways. My suspicion is that the collapse will slow-roll through the regions, while those in power not lucky enough to be exploiting the situation try their hardest to stay afloat.
