God created a hierarchy on earth just as he created one in heaven and even hell. The Church is the authority of the Christian faith on earth. The Church is guided by the Holy Spirit. The Church is Apostolic as it has been handed down by the Apostles. Christ created one Church. One faith. He didn't create thousands of contradicting churches who don't agree with each other and are led by self-appointed laymen.

The catholic church maintains that only it has the authority to interpret scripture. Yet they have only ever offered official interpretations for 7 verses. So basically they've written themselves a blank check to do whatever they want as long as they can twist scripture into supporting it. And they often do. No different than the Judaic mishna.
