There's strong smelling oils you can spread on the inside of mouse traps to make them attractive. Smells like food, but there's no way they can actually eat it all. And once they're trapped they're only thinking about escaping, not investigating nice smells.

No expert on mouse behavior, but curiosity probably plays a big role in this. Plus, it's a small space, which in theory makes them safer for predators, which is one reason why they might be interested in exploring it.

I'm not opposed to killing mice and rats, but drowning is a seriously fucked up way to do it. What's wrong with snap traps?

Snap traps are only good for one then need washed [the death smell keeps other from taking the bait] and reset. Considering the disease those things bring, squirming in your house, shitting all over the place, eating the walls and wires up, breeding more... fuck them little bastards let them drown.
